Description:

The Maine Mature Drivers Project presentation strives to inform older adults and the professionals who serve them (e.g., physicians; community health workers) about how aging-related changes in health and function may impact on driving safety, how the Maine BMV addresses medical-fitness-to-drive concerns, and how older drivers may self-regulate to remain safely behind the wheel OR make a smooth transition into driving retirement.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will learn about:

  1. Common medical-functional conditions, including substance use disorders, which impact on driver fitness in advancing age;
  2. Maine’s Functional Ability Profile (FAP) system and regulatory requirements for driver licensing;
  3. How health and social service professionals may support individual clients in this context.
