Description
Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment | November 15, 2022 | 8:30 AM to 11:45 AM | 3 Contact Hours (one 15 minute break)
Unhealthy alcohol and other substance use are among the most common causes of preventable morbidity and mortality. As healthcare moves to integrate behavioral health services within primary care settings, social workers are called upon to be familiar and adept with screening for and addressing unhealthy substance use. SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention & Referral to Treatment) is a screening and intervention tool that focuses on the one in five people who may use alcohol or drugs in unhealthy ways but who do not have a substance use disorder (i.e., dependence). Research shows that people in this category successfully change their use with feedback and brief intervention counseling, using SBIRT methodology.
This training is co-provided with the Northern New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network and will review the substance use continuum, evidence for SBIRT, and components of SBIRT.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the rationale and evidence for SBIRT in healthcare settings
Understand the validated screening tools for unhealthy substance use
Describe each SBIRT component: screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment
Discuss screening results by providing a brief intervention, using the Brief Negotiated Interview (BNI)
Learning Outcome:
Understand the integration of behavioral health services within primary care settings.
