Description:

Dr. Wozniak’s presentation will cover the basics of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) with an emphasis on strategies for screening, referral, and diagnosis. The presentation will also include a primer on the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on brain development and cognitive functioning and will touch on recent intervention research.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will be able to describe the common neurodevelopmental, cognitive, and behavioral issues faced by individuals exposed prenatally to alcohol
  2. Attendees will gain insights into implementing screening strategies for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) in their practice settings
  3. Attendees will have new awareness of how to make referrals for individuals who may have an FASD and will be able to cite the criteria used to make the diagnosis

Presenter: Jeffery Wozniak, PhD

Dr. Wozniak is a Professor, a pediatric neuropsychologist, and the director of child and adolescent research in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the University of Minnesota.  For more than 20 years, his research has focused on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in children.  He uses advanced MRI techniques and neuropsychology to characterize the neurodevelopmental impact of prenatal alcohol and he conducts novel clinical trials to treat the brain in FASD.
