This webinar will provide an overview of the social psychological principles related to stigma-reduction, with a focus on the stigmas associated with substance use and behavioral health conditions. Webinar content will give examples of research that supports actionable strategies to reduce stigma and we will discuss the application of these strategies to the clinical context. Webinar content will emphasis opportunities in everyday clinical practice that may be adapted to enhance equity, empathy and patient engagement.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand key concepts and theories related to the science of health stigma from a social psychological perspective.
  2. Identify opportunities to implement evidence-based strategies to reduce stigma in everyday clinical contexts.

Presenter: Liz Scharnetzki, PhD

Dr. Scharnetzki is a Faculty Scientist at CIPHR. She completed her PhD in Experimental Social Psychology at the University of Vermont. Broadly, Dr. Scharnetzki is interested in the psychological, physiological, and behavioral effects of social devaluation mechanisms such as stereotyping, stigmatization and social identity threat. Specifically, her research focuses on understanding how these mechanisms impact the uptake of health-promoting behaviors among patients with stigmatized identities and/or conditions and how these processes may ultimately contribute to health disparities.
