As follow up to the Introduction to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis course, this course offers a deeper look at how practitioners can utilize CBTp to help their clients.

Prerequisite Course – Introduction to Cognitive Behavior Therapy

As a follow-up to the Introduction to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) training, CCSME and the PIER program offered a two-session CBTp practitioner training series. This online course includes the video recordings from these sessions and offers a deeper look at how practitioners can integrate CBTp into their work. Part 1 focuses on early assessment and treatment and part 2 explores ongoing treatment.

Prior to participating in this course, participants should take the>online Introduction to CBTp course. Those who participated in the live Introduction to CBTp webinar in June 2020 do not need to take the online introduction.

Part 1 Description

Participants will learn skills to apply the CBTp principles reviewed in the introductory workshop.  This includes operationalizing the initial stages of CBTp treatment with specialized engagement strategies, Socratic questioning, formulation-based “making sense” interventions and targeted clinical strategies for psychosis.

What You Will Learn:

  • To build on prior learning of the structure of cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis;
  • To enhance skills and practice strategies of engagement, Socratic questioning in early stages of treatment
  • To enhance skills and practice treatment formulation using “making sense” model
  • To enhance skills and practice targeted interventions for psychosis.

Part 2 Description

Participants will learn skills to promote cognitive flexibility, will be introduced to psychosis-specific behavioral interventions, and learn a 5-step process of Cognitive Restructuring, a key concept in CBTp practice.  Participants will learn these techniques through trainer demonstration and role play practice at multiple stages in treatment.  Training participants will increase their awareness of what treatment looks like over time, as clients progress toward treatment goals.

  1. Review engagement, assessment/formulation, making sense and targeted interventions
  2. Build strategies to enhance cognitive flexibility: identifying thinking styles and introducing alternative beliefs
  3. Learn the 5 steps of Cognitive Restructuring—trainer demonstration
  4. Learn Psychosis-Specific Behavioral Strategies
  5. Enhance skills and practice at different stages of treatment
