Description:
Dr. Roxanne Chang’s presentation will address key management approaches and supports for children with FASD, taking into consideration commonly co-occurring contributors to neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral challenges such as polysubstance exposure and traumatic stressors. The presentation will also address commonly encountered pitfalls with traditional behavioral approaches and in educational environments.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify 3 key domains of challenge contributing to the neurobehavioral phenotype of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.
- Describe the impact of co-occurrence of trauma and polysubstance exposures with FASD.
- Identify 2 key trauma-informed management strategies for children with FASD.

Presenter: Roxanne Chang, MD, FAAP
Roxanne S. Chang, MD, FAAP, is a pediatrician in Torrance, California who has dedicated her 20+ years in practice to serving children and families from “hard places” – those with complex medical needs, developmental disabilities, foster and adoptive families, and those facing an array of difficulties from homelessness to substance use. She is an assistant clinical professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and performs the bulk of her teaching and clinical work at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center serving the underserved. She is also affiliated with Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, consulting with largely foster and adoptive families affected by prenatal substance and alcohol exposures and trauma. She works to increase awareness of and improve systems of care for families impacted by neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral disorders, including FASDs.
