Workshop Description
On January 28, 2020 the Department of Housing and Urban Development issued a Memorandum entitled “Assessing a Person’s Request to have an Animal as a Reasonable Accommodation in Housing. This workshop will review this new HUD guidance. This workshop will cover the topics included in this guidance such as: What is a reasonable accommodation? What is a service animal? What is an assistance animal? How is “disability” determined? What documentation is needed? Practical strategies regarding how to request such an accommodation given this new guidance will also be discussed.

About the Presenters
Mark Joyce
Mark joined DRM as an attorney in 2001 and for the last 19 years his practice has focused exclusively in the area of mental health law. He has advocated for the advancement of the rights of individuals with psychiatric labels in cases brought at every level of Maine’s court system. He has successfully argued emotional support animal claims in housing before the Maine Human Rights Commission. He is a former board member of the National Association of Rights Protection and Advocacy (NARPA) and serves as one of the class counsels in the class action lawsuit commonly known as the AMHI Consent Decree case.
